Using her wit and deep knowledge of medicines and poisons, Maomao plays a key role in solving many mysteries and intrigues within the imperial court. Having recently learned the secrets of her parents, she returns to her daily duties on behalf of the emperor's highest-ranking consorts. Maomao also works with the eunuch Jinshi to improve the consorts' many maids, including helping to teach them to read.
However, the arrival of a merchant caravan unleashes a new wave of intrigue. Strange coincidences involving the visitors and their luggage unsettle Maomao, leading her to investigate the strange circumstances behind the caravan. As threats from both outside and inside threaten the balance among the imperial concubines, Maomao continues to use her cunning and medical expertise to protect the women from harm.
